A structured bag in its shipped state occupies roughly 8,000 to 10,000 cubic centimetres and weighs 0.6 to 1.2 kg. Stuffing to hold shape increases volume rather than reducing it.
An empty bag is a box
Structured bags hold their shape, which means they hold their volume. A bag that weighs 800 grams can bill as 1.5 kg on a 6,000 divisor. The question is not how to make it lighter, which is impossible, but whether the bag can be nested inside other goods in the same parcel.
Stuffing is a shape decision, not a weight decision
Warehouses stuff bags to prevent creasing, and stuffing increases volume while marginally increasing weight. If the bag is being shipped on a volume-billed line, stuffing costs money. If it is on an actual-weight line, stuffing costs almost nothing and protects the item. Which one applies depends on the line, which is why the stuffing request should follow the line choice rather than precede it.
Leather is a separate question from bags
Some lines restrict animal-derived materials categorically, and the restriction applies to the material rather than the product. A canvas bag with a leather trim can fall on the wrong side of that line, so the check is against the material list rather than the category.
Packing and inspection points
- Ask the warehouse not to over-stuff if the parcel is going on a volume-billed line.
- Nest small items inside the bag instead of packing them alongside it — this recovers volume rather than adding it.
- Confirm the trim material from the listing before booking on a line that restricts animal-derived materials.
- Keep the dust bag: it protects the surface and weighs almost nothing.
- For structured bags, ask for corner protection rather than full stuffing.
