Hoodies and outerwear through the index: what changes at the border

A single puffer jacket in its shipped state occupies roughly 11,000 to 13,000 cubic centimetres loose and about 40 percent less when vacuum-compressed. Not verified for every line, because compression acceptance varies by carrier.
Puffers behave like furniture
A puffer jacket weighs under a kilogram and can occupy twelve litres of space. On a 6,000 divisor that bills as two kilograms. Nothing about the jacket is heavy; everything about it is air. Compression is the single highest-return packing action in this category, and it is also the one most often refused when not requested explicitly at the warehouse.
Fleece and knitwear are the opposite problem
A heavyweight fleece hoodie is dense: it weighs what it looks like it weighs, and it compresses poorly because the fabric has little trapped air. For dense knitwear the billing question is almost entirely about actual weight, so line choice should optimise cost per kilogram rather than volume.
Outerwear is where classification variance shows up
Coated fabrics, filled jackets and garments with a shell and a lining can classify differently from a plain knit of the same shape and price. That is why a two-jacket parcel can produce a duty outcome that looks inconsistent with a three-hoodie parcel: the inputs to classification changed, not the regime.
Packing and inspection points
- Ask explicitly for vacuum compression on filled garments. Do not assume it happens by default.
- Fold dense knitwear flat and stack it; rolling dense fabric increases the footprint without reducing volume.
- Keep one garment uncompressed if it is a gift or resale item — compression marks on down and on structured shoulders are hard to reverse.
- Weigh the parcel both before and after compression if the warehouse records it, and keep both numbers for the shipping-line decision.
- For a multi-garment parcel, put the dense items at the bottom and the filled items on top so compression does not crush structure.
