Can I edit the SKU parameters in a link by hand?
You can, and it is one of the few ways to turn a working order into a wrong one. The parameters encode a variant, and editing them by hand is guesswork with a real cost.
The evidence
Variant parameters are identifiers rather than labels. They do not read as "large" or "navy"; they read as codes that the marketplace uses to look up a specific combination. Changing a character does not switch the variant, it produces an identifier that either does not exist or refers to a different combination entirely.
The failure is quiet. A non-existent identifier usually fails at order time with a message, which is recoverable. An identifier that exists but refers to a different combination does not fail; it orders the wrong thing, and the correction path runs through a domestic return. That asymmetry is why hand-editing is not worth the risk.
The correct way to change a variant is to change it on the listing page and copy the resulting address, which regenerates the parameters from the marketplace rather than from your edit. The extra step takes seconds and produces an address that the marketplace itself generated, which is the only kind of address with a guarantee attached.
When this does not apply
Where the parameter is a quantity rather than a variant, editing it is sometimes safe, because quantity parameters are frequently plain numbers. The distinction is whether the value is an opaque code or a readable number; opaque codes should never be hand-edited.
